Career Guidance at an Early Age is No Longer an Option. It is a Necessity.
Many students spend years in education only to reach 21 or 22 and still wonder:
“What do I actually want to do with my life?”
Is it realistic to expect a bachelor’s degree alone to help a young person discover their career goals?
Perhaps the better question is:
Is a 16-year-old really too young to start learning about careers, opportunities, and the future of work?
Career guidance is not about forcing students to choose one profession at 16. It is about helping them explore possibilities, understand themselves, discover their strengths, and develop awareness of the world beyond textbooks.
By the time students reach 21 or 22, they should not be starting the journey of career discovery. They should already have enough exposure and understanding to make informed decisions about the direction they wish to pursue.
Education is important, but education alone is not the key to success.
Students must also learn:
• How careers actually evolve over time
• That failures and setbacks are a normal part of growth
• The value of adaptability, curiosity, and lifelong learning
• That what they learn from experiences often matters more than the outcome itself
• The difference between finding a job and building a meaningful career
A degree can open doors.
Career awareness helps students decide which doors are worth opening.
The earlier we start these conversations, the better prepared young people will be for the decisions that shape their future.
